Naper Settlement, located in Naperville, IL, is an outdoor history museum featuring 13 acres of learning and interactive opportunities for all ages.
Job Summary:
Oversee the acquisitions, management, curation, and production of digital assets (both the digitization of physical collections and born-digital assets) and content to evaluate and preserve the assets, facilitate access to users as appropriate, and develop and produce digital storytelling for the museum. Evaluates digital collections programs and their visitor and user impact.
Directly supervises assigned interns and volunteers. Works in cooperation with the IT Team Leader, Curator of History, Distance Learning Team Leader, Registrar, Marketing, and other staff as needed.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
1. DEVELOPS a comprehensive Digital Collection Plan to build the structures (equipment, technology, software, systems, and staff) needed to create and preserve the digital assets that populate robust digital exhibitions and experiences.
2. DETERMINES storage needs for images, videos, audios, and any other digital media. CREATES the workflows and evaluates and recommends hardware and software to move the museum forward in its digital preservation, access, and exhibition goals. OVERSEES the implementation of the selected digital preservation and exhibition systems.
3. ENSURES proper documentation, metadata, and storage procedures are followed, in accordance with nationally accepted standards.
4. IMPLEMENTS digitization of collection materials utilizing best metadata and digitization standards and practices
5. EVALUATES current technology appropriate for capturing oral histories. SUPPORTS the capture of audio and visual media for oral histories.
6. DEVELOPS innovative approaches to engage online audiences with digital storytelling, exhibits, and the Museum’s new digital experience. EVALUATES incoming assets for appropriateness and content alignment.
7. DEVELOPS and IMPLEMENTS policies and procedures specific to digital materials. ASSISTS Chief Curator in the development and enforcement of curatorial policies and procedures.
8. SERVES on the Acquisitions committee. SUPPORTS the accession of born digital and archival materials.
9. ASSISTS in digital experience budgetary development, equipment oversight, and OVERSEES specific grant management.
10. PROVIDES ACCESS to archival and prints and photograph collections by writing finding aids, creating collection-level records and metadata descriptions and rehousing collections where appropriate. SUPPORTS the Curator of History in providing reference services for archival, photographic, and born digital collections. COORDINATES reproductions requests and ensures proper licensing and credit lines for all distributed images.
11. NETWORKS with local, regional, and national professional and museum colleagues.
12. PERFORMS all other duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Experience with processing archival collections as well as creating metadata for finding aids and digital objects. Experience managing born-digital and digitized collections based upon a strong understanding of FADGI compliant digitization. Experience with metadata standards relevant to the archival management of digital objects (EAD, Dublin Core, MODS, METS, PREMIS). Understanding of rights, permissions, and restrictions related to providing access to digital media. Experience with hardware and software related to digital ingest, processing, access, and storage. Knowledge of current digital exhibition experience platforms. Knowledge of museum best practices in registration methods, collections management, and accessioning. Knowledge of U.S. and Illinois history. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with donors, the public, volunteers, staff and Naperville Heritage Society members is important. Physical ability to lift and move collection objects. Flexibility and ability to meet deadlines is essential.
Minimum Education, Experience and Certification:
Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school/program or in an appropriately related field from an accredited college or university required. Bachelor’s degree required in one of the following: Digital Humanities (preferred), American History, American Studies, Museum Studies or related field. Five years of professional level curatorial or archival experience working with digital collections required.
