Connecting & Building a Network

Informational interviews are great ways to gather information for building your network, understanding hiring practices and workplace nuances, and exploring career options. They generally involve 15-20 minute conversations with professionals (alumni love doing this!) about their careers and what they do in their jobs. Requesting and conducting informational interviews is about networking and gathering information about a particular industry or occupation—it is not about asking for a job.

Email template:
An email is the best way to initiating a conversation with a contact. Introduce yourself and ask for an informational interview. Here is an example:Subject: Request from WPI student for 15 minute informational interviewGood morning, my name is ____________.
I am a junior at Worcester Polytechnic Institute pursing a Bachelor of Science degree in _______ (field), and I’d love to find out more about working in (industry, type of role, etc.). Would you be willing to talk with me via Zoom
sometime over the next week or two?
Thank you,
